Friday, April 9th – 7:00 PM – Mr. David Clayton
“Make the Form Conform - letting Tradition guide us when commissioning art for our churches”
Mr. David Clayton is a graduate of Oxford University, where he earned an M.A. in Materials Science, and Michigan Technological University, where he gained an M.S. in Engineering. He paints and draws in two Christian artistic traditions—Byzantine iconography and Western classical naturalism (training at the Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy). He has had commissions in the United Kingdom and in America including a portrait of St. Luigi Scrosoppi at the London Oratory; a five foot cross, gilded and painted on both sides and suspended over the altar at Pluscarden Abbey in Scotland; and the icon of the Sacred Heart commissioned by the Maryvale Institute in Birmingham to commemorate their 25th anniversary. He lectured at the Maryvale Institute in their art-theory course, which he designed along with other staff at the institute, called Art, Inspiration and Beauty from a Catholic Perspective. He has illustrated three books for children. David’s articles about art and education have appeared in Catholic publications such as Second Spring, St Austin Review, the Catholic News Agency website, and The Catholic Herald on London.
Friday, April 16th – 2:00 PM - Dr. Gladys Sweeney
“The psychological consequences of original sin and the proper response called forth from the psychological sciences”
“Sin” grates on the ears of modern psychology, and the notion that sin produces negative effects in one’s personal life -- including psychological issues--is roundly scorned. The only undesirable effect of sin, according to most psychologists today, is crippling, unwarranted guilt.
But sin is a reality. The effects of sin extend not only to the moral realm but the physical and psychological realms as well.
Dr. Sweeney is the founder and Dean of the Institute for the Psychological Sciences. She has lectured at the North American College in Rome and has been a faculty member of the Division of Child Psychiatry, Department of Pediatrics, at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Sweeney’s area of interest is the integration of the psychological sciences with the Catholic view of the human person. Dr. Sweeney co-edited Human Nature in its Fullness: A Roman Catholic Perspective CUA Press, July, 2006.
