Social Life

The social life on campus assists each student to grow in friendship and develop the habits necessary to live life well. The social activities aim at fostering leadership, initiative, and creativity in the students, as well as providing wholesome recreation and leisure.
Social, cultural, and recreational activities are organized throughout the year: dramatic plays, musical talent shows, intramural sports, skiing, canoeing, cook-outs, bonfires with sing-a-longs, dances, special dinner celebrations and trips to symphonies and concerts.
Student Clubs and Organizations
As part of the integrated program at Magdalen College, students enjoy a variety of events and activities that allow them to grow in friendship and take a break from studies. There are a variety of active clubs and social groups on campus, both institutional and student-initiated. Here is a sampling:
Outing Club
Mr. Rudy Bourget, Comptroller/Bookkeeper of the College, wanted to share his Scout master experience and started the Outing Club. The students quickly became involved and now run a club with officers and bi-weekly meetings. The activities that the club offers include hiking, camping, and cookouts. During their bi-weekly meetings, Mr. Bourget trains the students in a variety of practical skills like basic first aid, what to do in the event of hypothermia, and how to properly prepare for a hike.
Intramural Sports
Intramural sports on campus are student-organized. The men have a weekly basketball league and the women have a weekly volleyball league. Both leagues play throughout the year and hold playoffs near the end of second semester. On Sunday afternoons the students enjoy co-ed volleyball. Other sports the students participate in are soccer, ultimate Frisbee, and hoccer.
The St. Genesius Players
The St. Genesius Players is a drama group dedicated to bringing excellent theatrical productions to the College community.
St. Genesius was an actor hired to work in a play that ridiculed Christian Baptism. In the middle of the performance he suddenly received a word from God, realized the truth of Christianity, and converted onstage. This conversion resulted in his martyrdom. He is remembered on August 25.
The St. Genesius Players stage three productions a year, such as comedies, dramas, and broadway musicals. Each member has the opportunity to discover and develop their unique talents.
Auditions are open to experienced and inexperienced actors and actresses. Students who are involved in the St. Genesius Players drama club not only perform but also design costumes, compose stage music, paint the sets, and assist the director.
Social Club
Every weekend the students anticipate social club activities because of their diversity and uniqueness. The social club will often plan events that include the entire College community. Activities so far this year include bowling, Casino night, and ice-skating. The Social Club also plans trips to attend cultural events throughout New England such as the symphony or the opera, an art show, or a play. All Social Club activities foster friendship, develop leadership, and inspire creativity amongst the students.
